Computer/Computed Radiography (CR) uses very similar equipment to conventional radiography except that in the place of a film to create the image, an imaging plate (IP) made of photo stimulable phosphor is used. Hence instead of taking an exposed film into a dark room for developing in chemical tanks, the imaging plate is run through a special laser scanner, or CR reader, that reads and digitizes the image. The digital image can then be viewed and enhanced using software.

The CR scanners offered by VMI are flat bed as opposed to traditional drum based scanner which increases the life of the imaging plates drastically. They are designed for harsh industrial environments whilst incorporate the latest digital technology which delivers full 16 bit performance at a 50 micron resolution. VMI Scanners can scan round, square or rectangle imaging plates; literally any size up to a 14"x17" format (special scanner upto 51" are also available). The flat, single path makes the use of either a hard cassette or soft, flexible cassette, a reality in a single CR system that can handle any size imaging plate.
The VMI scanners meet the most stringent image quality requirements of industry and have passed all of the following testing
- Vibration Testing: 10 minutes per axis.
- Shock Testing: 30G Shock-18 repetitions.
- Transit Drop Test: 10 drops from two feet.
- Blowing Sand Test: Blowing sand at 45 MPH for hours.
- Settling Dust: 6 gm/m2/day for three days.
- Humidity Test: 5 day extreme humidity cycle.
- Salt Fog Test: 5% sodium chloride fog for 48 hours.
- Fungus Test: 28 day exposure to fungus spores.
- Temperature Testing: Temperatures from 30 degrees F to 105 degrees F.
